He was a member of the Crooked Circle Club. About his painting he said: "The impulse of my painting is not color heroism, the sheer pleasure of juxtaposing colors and hues. I am concerned with the metaphor of painting thoughtfulness about man, especially in these times. This is a difficult matter, as the metaphysical aspects of form and color come into play. I am looking for economical, synthetic forms. I prefer a limited, subdued range of colors, and avoid staffage. A painting should speak, not talk, awaken sensations that count the most in a person. What matters to me is if someone noticing my painting slows down."
