Seifu Matsuda, Collection of Japanese tenugui fabrics by Seifu Matsuda

a unique collection of 12 tenugui fabrics from Matsuyama, the capital of Ehime Prefecture. Seifu Matsuda, the main author of this project, was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin Hanga movement, which drew on traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts. Seifu Matsuda was active in the early 20th century, especially around 1915, creating works that often depicted Kabuki actors in the ukiyo-e style. He was also the author of all 12 of the elegant cardboard wrappers that accompany each fabric.
Most of the fabrics are in good condition, but some show dampstains and stains that have developed over the years.
However, the collection was not the result of the work of just one artist. The accompanying document also lists other individuals who likely contributed to the design. Each design is carefully crafted, and the variety of motifs draws on Japanese theatrical tradition, mythology and culture.
