After World War II and his forced departure from Vilnius, Ludomir Sleńdziński settled with his family in Kraków in 1945, where he took up the chair of freehand drawing at the Faculty of Architecture of the Kraków University of Technology. He remained associated with the university for many years; from 1948 to 1956 he served as its rector, and until his retirement in 1960, he educated a large group of architects. The depicted scene, featuring a figure resting in the shade, is an excellent study of architectural composition, combining academic technical rigor with painterly nostalgia. The drawing may have been created during one of the artist’s plein air sessions with students or during his summer stays in Zakopane.
