his work reflects the influences of Futurism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and

The “Europe” series focuses on mythological, historical, and cultural
themes related to Europe, both as a continent and as an idea, offering
a reflection on the fate and identity of Europe. “Europe” can be interpreted as
a meditation on the continent’s fate, particularly in the context of the hardships of the 20th century,
such as world wars, the collapse of empires, and the rebirth of the idea of
. Cocteau raises questions about Europe’s boundaries and possibilities, both in
geographical and cultural terms. Other works
by Jean Cocteau from this series: Europe—Misunderstandings, Europe—Distrust, Europe—
A Difficult Decision, Europe—So Much Tension, Europe—Anger Between Nations

works an almost sketch-like quality. His paintings possess a poetic, ephemeral
atmosphere, and many of them are characterized by a simplicity of form that reflects his
interest in Surrealism and classical minimalism.
