Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) - Great Hetman of the Crown, Great Chancellor of the Crown, outstanding politician, strategist and reformer of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He studied in Padua and Strasbourg, gaining a thorough education in the humanities. He was a trusted advisor to King Stefan Batory, and co-founded his victorious military campaigns against Moscow. After Batory's death, he played a key role in the election of Sigismund III Vasa, although he came into conflict with him over time. As hetman and chancellor, he took care of discipline in the army, urban development and administrative reforms. He founded Zamość - an ideal Renaissance city - and the Zamojska Academy, a center of science and culture. Considered one of the most outstanding statesmen of the era, he combined a vision of a strong monarchy with concern for the public good.
