Otakar Cila was a Czech painter known for his realistic and impressionistic landscapes with an emphasis on natural scenes and wildlife. In the work Partridges, he depicts a group of partridges in a winter landscape, surrounded by snowy branches and grass. Typical of his work is the sensitive capture of the atmosphere and natural environment in which animals are found. The use of a soft palette of pastel colors and a light, loose brushwork gives the scene a kind of poetic lightness and intimacy.
