A set consisting of two etchings and burin engravings on paper from the late 18th century, part of the documentary series dedicated to the Galerie du Palais Royal by Louis Philippe d’Orléans. The first print, titled LE VIEILLARD (The Old Man), reproduces a painting by David Teniers the Younger depicting the interior of a Flemish tavern with figures playing cards. It bears the following printed inscriptions: in the lower left, “Peint par David Teniers”; in the center, “Gravé à l’eau-forte par Michel”; and on the right, “Terminé par H. Guttenberg.” The lower portion features a lengthy descriptive text in French identifying the work as the third painting by Teniers in the collection, belonging to the ECOLE FLAMANDE. The second engraving, titled CHOC DE CAVALERIE (Cavalry Charge), is based on a work by Jacques Courtois, known as “the Burgundian,” and depicts a dynamic battle scene. It bears the inscriptions: “Peint par J. Courtois dit le Bourguignon” on the left, “Dessiné par Borel” in the center, and “Gravé à l’eau-forte par Bertaux, et terminé par Liénard” on the right. The text below classifies it under the ROMAN SCHOOL. Both prints bear the coat of arms of the Duke of Orléans and the inscription “De la Galerie de S.A.S. Monseigneur le Duc d’Orléans” with the abbreviations A.P. D.R. (Avec Privilège du Roi). The works are mounted in matching maple-veneer frames with red inner trim.
External dimensions of the frame: height approximately 42.5 cm, width approximately 32.5 cm (measured with a ruler in photos 2 and 3).
